چکیده

In this chapter, we present the state of the art of the spectrum sensing techniques for cognitive radio networks as well and their comparisons. The rest of the chapter is organized as below: Section I.1, Section I.2, and Section I.3 present the spectrum management problem and the cognitive radio cycle as well as the compressive sensing solution; Section II.1 describes the spectrum sensing model; Section II.2 presents the existing spectrum sensing techniques, including energy, autocorrelation, Euclidian distance, wavelet, and matched filter based sensing. Finally, a conclusion is given at the end of the chapter. I.1 Spectrum Management and Cognitive Radio Wireless networks and information traffic have grown exponentially over the last decade, which has resulted in an excessive demand for the radio spectrum resources [1][2]. The radio spectrum is a limited resource controlled by regulations and the recognized authorities, such as the federal communications commission (FCC) in the US. The current radio spectrum allocation policy consists of assigning the channels to specific users with licenses for specific wireless technologies and services. Those licensed users have access to that spectrum portions to transmit/receive their data, while others are forbidden even when those spectrum portions is unoccupied [3]. Recent studies reported that the spectrum utilization ranges from 15% to 85% in the US under the fixed spectrum allocation (FSA) policy [4]. FCC measurements also show that some channels are heavily used while others are sparsely used as illustrated in Figure 1 [5].

Spectrum Sensing Data Falsification Attack in Cognitive Radio Networks: An Analytical Model for Evaluation and Mitigation of Performance Degradation

Cognitive Radio (CR) networks enable dynamic spectrum access and can significantly improve spectral efficiency. Cooperative Spectrum Sensing (CSS) exploits the spatial diversity between CR users to increase sensing accuracy. However, in a realistic scenario, the trustworthy of CSS is vulnerable to Spectrum Sensing Data Falsification (SSDF) attack. In an SSDF attack, some malicious CR users deli...

Attack-Aware Cooperative Spectrum Sensing in Cognitive Radio Networks under Byzantine Attack

Cooperative Spectrum Sensing (CSS) is an effective approach to overcome the impact of multi-path fading and shadowing issues. The reliability of CSS can be severely degraded under Byzantine attack, which may be caused by either malfunctioning sensing terminals or malicious nodes. Almost, the previous studies have not analyzed and considered the attack in their models. The present study introduc...

Secure Collaborative Spectrum Sensing in the Presence of Primary User Emulation Attack in Cognitive Radio Networks

Collaborative Spectrum Sensing (CSS) is an effective approach to improve the detection performance in Cognitive Radio (CR) networks. Inherent characteristics of the CR have imposed some additional security threats to the networks. One of the common threats is Primary User Emulation Attack (PUEA). In PUEA, some malicious users try to imitate primary signal characteristics and defraud the CR user...

Spectrum Assignment in Cognitive Radio Networks Using Fuzzy Logic Empowered Ants

The prevalent communications networks suffer from lack of spectrum and spectrum inefficiency. This has motivated researchers to develop cognitive radio (CR) as a smart and dynamic radio access promised solution. A major challenge to this new technology is how to make fair assignment of available spectrum to unlicensed users, particularly for smart grids communication. This paper introduces an i...

Dynamic Spectrum Access in Cognitive Radio Wireless Sensor Networks Using Different Spectrum Sensing Techniques

Cognitive Radio Wireless Sensor Networks are emerging technology which provides cognitive capabilities to Wireless Sensor Networks. WSN operates in unlicensed band. Same spectrum band is shared by other wireless devices like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Due to this, the unlicensed spectrum is overcrowded which degrades the performance of WSNs. To overcome this issue, Cognitive Radio is integrated with ...
